The House of Light was created at the first Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale (2000) as a work of James Turrell, a light artist. In this unique experimental work of art you can experience the world of his work during your stay.

It was conceived of as a guesthouse for meditation.

Turrell discovered this concept in Junichiro Tanizaki’s “In Praise of Shadows.”

He came up with the idea of fusing the intimate light of a traditional Japanese house with the work of light he had created.

Spend your time facing the light in the rich nature of Echigo-Tsumari.
